hi, i am just starting off learning how to record music and i'm about to build a small studio to learn more.
i can record instruments really well and get the sound through the headphones and monitors live, but i cannot get or figure out how to get the recording to playback so i can hear and edit it. when i click play, you can see it playing but i get no sound through the headphones or monitors. how can i fix this??

This means that you're sending signal from the mixer to the headphones/monitors, instead of sending signal from Reaper *through* the mixer. Try this instead: deactivate the zero-latency monitoring first (on my audio interface you turn the 'direct-usb' knob all the way to 'usb', I don't know how to do it with your mixer). Now, in Reaper, next to the 'record arm' button on every track, there's a small speaker icon. Click it so it's dark; this activates input monitoring. Now you can still hear the audio as you record; the advantage is you can also hear all previously-recorded audio at the same time, and you can monitor through your insert effects (useful for instance if you're recording guitar direct but wish to monitor it through an amp sim).
