Where did my (Mac OSX) speakers go?
Recently my computer has been giving me a host of problems. I run an iMac G5 PowerPC. I have re-installed my OS and software bundle, among other things, and now my speakers won't be found. I also have ProTools (Digidesign), and I purchased an external hard drive (XHD) when my computer was crashing. I think the ProTools software is interfering with my internal sound (at the very least), and I would like to move it entirely onto my XHD so my computer doesn't have to 'think' about it during start up. It has scatterede itself thoroughly throughout all my system folders unfortunately, and I cannot seem to get it all.
My speakers: I have no sound and iTunes won't play songs at all. When I go to the sound panel in my system preferences, everything is greyed out, and both input and output are set to Digidesign HW (which - I don't know WHY that is even in there). It says the device has no input/output controls. Internal speakers are not apparently an option. Any ideas? Thanks!
It sounds as if ProTools is interfering with your system software in a big way. I would suggest asking on a ProTools forum or trying their support line.

Do you need Pro Tools compatibility? Pro Tools is widely regarded as the industry standard in music recording software, and not quite quite a few interfaces are compatible with Pro Tools. You'll want to look into M-Audio's M-Powered line of interfaces like the M-box, Quick Track Pro, or Mobile Pre. These also usually come bundled with a stripped-down version of Pro Tools like Pro Tools SE. Let me state here, however, that Pro Tools is definitely NOT mandatory, even if it's considered the industry standard. Should you aren't planning to have multiple studios working on your projects, all with their own set-ups, then compatibility just isn't an issue. Your audio interface, in whatever form, is essential for recording your audio tracks.
